Trends in Outdoor Christmas Decorations 2018

Do you ever wonder what it must have been like to be the first house to set their Christmas light display to music? There's something to be said for being a trendsetter! And even if you don't want to be the flashiest house on the block, refreshing your decoration collection often keeps your holiday spirit fresh and fun.

For the 2018-2019 season, we suggest choosing a theme and keeping it simple. While massive light and decoration displays can be lovely, overstuffing a small front yard doesn't have the same effect. If you want to do a nativity scene, you don't necessarily have to invite Santa Claus and an army of blow-up snowmen to the party.

If you choose to put up the nativity, why not consider switching out the traditional with the modern? Finding yourself tired of seeing the same style of statue that looks like it walked out of a painting doesn't mean you're tired of the nativity itself. Quite the opposite! Make your yard look like a museum display with white Roman stone-style figures, or opt for something illuminated. Stained glass pieces will also make an impression.

If you're opting for the Santa Claus route, focus on how you want to present the jolly ol' elf. Fun and silly decorations will make you feel like a kid again, but more elegant pieces will remind you that you are, in fact, a grownup. A reindeer that would be at home in Victorian England might not pair too well with a more "cartoony" Santa chatting with an elf. To spruce things up a bit, take wide wired ribbon and drape it across your bushes as if it were crisscrossing a package. Add a matching big bow and your lawn becomes and instant gift to the whole neighborhood.

Don't forget LED decorations! Not only are they more energy efficient, but they also look good and last long. And LED Star of Bethlehem hanging over your nativity will seem like it is shining extra bright on the waking eyes of baby Jesus. Reindeer and colorful characters like carolers and elves glowing through a fresh snowfall are bound to make your home feel like a winter wonderland. Just don't spend too much time outdoors admiring your work - you may catch that cold your grandmother was always warning you about.
